By the way, I now use Twitter. It's like blogging for when I don't have time to sit at the computer and compose a blog entry. You can send it text messages from your cell phone, which I do often. (You can also IM it or use the website.) All entries are 140 characters or less, and I have 129 entries as of right now. It's for the more random thoughts I have!

Read my Twitter.

Oh, another thing, Yahoo photos closed down. I requested that my pictures be transferred to Flickr, but they're not yet there. Will let you know when I have a new home for my pictures. (I ordered a CD backup of each of my two Yahoo photos accounts, just in case this transfer doesn't work as expected.)

So, my camera would have me believe that I went to Disneyland yesterday with Julio, Kassie, and Albert. However, the car would have me believe otherwise.

I suppooooosedly filled up the tank with gas in El Monte.
Drove 25.7 miles to Disneyland.
Drove Kassie home to El Monte. (27.5 miles)
Drove Albert to Circle K to be picked up by his mom. (1.6 miles)
Drove Julio to my mom's house where he had his car. (0.6 miles)
Drove home to North Hollywood. (30 miles)
Drove to school this morning. (3.9 miles)
Then back home (3.9 miles)
Drove to the doctor's office. (5.8 miles)
And back... (5.8 miles)

104 miles that my camera would have me believe I've driven since I filled up the tank yesterday, and I have this much gas:

Not old as in old, you know, but people I've known for nearly a decade. =)

I stayed at my mom's house on Wednesday night so we could get an earlier start out of El Monte. I picked up Stephanie, Billy, and Billy's brother Albert and we drove down to Disneyland. on Thursday morning We got there shortly before opening, and there wasn't any line for the first three of four things we went on. It was great. =) We actually saw almost everything we wanted to see!

On Sunday, I'm taking Julio and Kassie (who had to work on Thursday) and probably Albert again. Charles and I went both Saturday and Sunday last weekend (but not all day). I may have to keep a close eye on my magicalness consumption, four visits in two weeks may be dangerous! =P

Pictures at the usual place- here.

I had to get in one more trip before our Spring Break blackout days, so Charles suggested that I go during the week sometime. I would have felt pretty silly going by myself, so I invited my sisters to come too.

We had a really good time. First we went to California Adventure. We got fast passes for Soaring Over California (which is awesome), went to see the Disney Animation's Turtle Talk with Crush and Animation Academy, then returned to Soaring Over California, then went to see the Aladdin Musical Spectacular, which was also very good.

Then we went to eat at Disneyland, went to the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Jungle Cruise, and the Tiki Room. We did some shopping in between, and eventually made our way to the photo shop on main street. There's a new photo service that I really like. They give you a card that gets scanned by each photographer in the park, so you show them the card at the photo shops and they pull up all your pictures, rather than having a ticket for each picture. Very cool, we bought some pictures of the three of us, including one to give to my parents. There's a picture from way back (I was like 8, maybe) of the three of us at Disneyland, and we wanted to recreate it but they don't have a photography place anymore. That and we weren't feeling silly enough to buy mouse ears either!

So anyway, after the pictures, we watched the Parade of Dreams at 7pm. There were a ton of people already, so Irma and I decided that we should camp out for the fireworks at 9:30pm. Martha and Cyndi went off to try to get on a ride or two in the meantime, while Irma and I saved seats. We got an awesome spot almost directly in front of the castle. =)

Then Martha and Cyndi rode Indiana Jones, which they had a fast pass for. Then we went back to a shop for a hat that Martha had her eye on before but didn't get, then we came home.

Pretty good day, if you ask me!

So, instead of doing my homework like I probably should have, Charles and I went to Disneyland yesterday. It was a lot of fun, esspecially since it was free now that he's a Disney cast member. We had a lot of fun, we went to Adventureland and New Orleans Square. (I couldn't believe he'd never been to the Tiki room before, so we had to start on that side of the park!) Of course, we were analyzing everything we saw and figuring out how things worked. =P

Pictures are on my Yahoo pictures page, though it's a lot of pictures of things we saw and not that many of us. But you can look if you want, of course! It's here.

PS. We got a new bigger bed, and I love it

To get this quality of picture, I had to put the camera inside the tank at the other end, do not attempt this shot through glass. =)

This may be hard to read, it's a cell phone picture of a laptop screen. Not mine, but my aunt and uncle's new laptop that I was setting up for them (you know, downloading open source software in Spanish, etc).

The powers that be (such as Microsoft and/or Compaq) are saving themselves a couple of pennies these days by not including CDs for new computers. The OS is hidden somewhere in some logical partition that supposedly won't go bad. You know, in theory. But they do recommend that you make a CD just in case.

The text of the applet they pop up to do it, for those who don't have super-human eyesight:
Number of DVD(DL)s required: 1
Number of DVDs required: 2
Number of CDs required: 12

Of course, all responsible Windows users who want to have a recovery disc should have dual-layer dvd burning capabilities. Can you imagine restoring Windows XP from 12 CDs?

This one is my late kitty Draco (July 2002-~February 2005.). He was very smart, very socialized to humans. I don't think he ever really interacted positively with other animals; he thought he was human. He'd wait for me outside the bathroom door, meet me at the door when I got home even when I worked nights (and got home about 4am), and at least once stole the ham right out of my sandwich while I was eating it. Sometimes, when I got out of bed, he'd go lay down on his back with his head on my pillow! Too cute. =)

This picture was taken by me with my husband's phone (long before we got married, of course) and then sent to my phone.

Subject:Couches! Yay! (Oh, and Christmas 1)

So, among other Christmas goodies from my family this year, we got couches! You see, my sister Martha got some other couches (I'm unsure where, if she bought them or what) and gave her couches to my other sister Irma. Irma then gave her couches to her husband Paco to use in his garage. Well, he had them for a month or so before he said that they were in his way and too big for the garage, so he gave them to us. In return, we gave him a little blue sofa-chair that we got from a neighbor.

We went to my parents' house yesterday and traded our Focus for their Tahoe. Then we went to my sister's house, loaded up the two main portions of the couch set, brought them home and unloaded them. Then we loaded the blue chair for Paco and drove back to mom's in time for our Christmas meal. I don't know if you'd call it a late lunch or early dinner, it was about 3:30pm. We had dinner, did gifts, and were done by like 7:30pm. We were going to go to Irma's to drop off the blue chair after gift-giving but my mom said she'd drop it off for them today, we'll pick up the corner piece in the Explorer some other time. Irma and Paco ran off, so there isn't a picture of the whole family together this year like there normally is... Oh well, just means I have to post more pictures to show everyone!

Tonight is Christmas with my husband's family. =)

My cross stitching project went over well. Turns out Cyndi had picked up the same one but had trouble making it because she had forgotten how to do stuff, being so long since she stitched. She said she couldn't believe I finished it. =)

By the way, in case you've never seen a skateboarding snail, I thought I'd pass this on to brighten everyone's Christmas! =)

I have some new pictures on my Yahoo pictures, particularly in the folder "2006 Sea World 2."

Here, for example, is Charles touching a dolphin.

I'm actually going to be deleting some pictures to thin it out in the next couple of minutes, but you didn't hear me say that. ;)

I wanted to share some pictures from Sea World while I'm checking my email. (I've been resting most of the day, very tired from the trip.)

I made this mosaic using Flickr. I like Flickr for the most part, although its interface is clunky and the upload limit is a pain- I can upload all the pictures I like at too low a resolution to do anything with them, or upload only 11 today and have to wait until December 1st to upload any more. Yahoo pictures, on the other hand, is a nicer interface and no upload or storage limits, but you can't link there because the filenames change. Pffft. So, I made the mosaic but I can't upload it to Flickr, I've put it on my website space instead.

The rest of the pictures can be viewed at my Yahoo pictures site, as usual.

I spent a good portion of yesterday with my friends I've known since high school. It was a lot of fun, good times. Now I must hunt down the person with the camera so I can show you!

I slept at mom's house because it was quite late when we were done (honestly, I would have done it even if it were still early, cuz I had business with mom). I did some genealogy research at her house, finding documentation to things I "mostly" knew already. (Meaning I knew most of it, and mostly knew all of it, but it's not official unless it's in writing anyway!) I burned CDs with pictures for her and each of my sisters, so they can make prints at WalMart/Target/etc. We watched a slideshow on my laptop, they loved it. Dad even asked how much the laptop cost, I think he may have been thinking of entering the computer age, but he probably won't. That's okay. =)

Future project: We have dvd burning capabilities, my parents have no computer capabilities. 2+2="I need to learn how to make dvd slideshows." (Sisters have computers. However, one sister's computer is a Win98 machine whose hardware has past its prime, and the other's is a computer that once surpassed the machine that's now our server but is now laden with spyware and useless programs.)

Dad was getting bored of other people's children on the computer slideshow, so our photo dvds have to have menus so he can navigate to what he wants to see or he needs to be able to click through them quickly. "Chapters" of related pictures on a timed cycle could work well.

Subject:Working on mom's pictures
Time:04:54 am

I have 587 files in the directory I’m scanning them to. I did all of the albums that had pocket style pages. The ones in the sticky pages are on my bookcase now (she hasn’t asked for them back, she knew I was going to scan “some” of her stuff while she was in Mexico) and I’ve been debating over how to tackle them.

My sister insists that mom will freak out if I take them out, so I have two options.

1. I photograph them through their plastic.
Pros: Less work, fewer fingerprints, no risk of damage from the removal itself.
Cons: Photos are still un-safe over time, possibly reduced quality or increased glare.

2. I take them out, scan then, then put them into something else. Probably a scrapbook for each one, or for each kind (my mom has an album for the wedding of each of her sisters, among other albums). I’ve long wanted to do a scrapbook where I’d have two copies of some pictures. I’d apply a coloring book filter and write in the names of people on their outline, and mom and dad could identify the people I can’t name.
Pros: Photos are safe, people can be identified for us and future generations, scrapbooks are cooler than photo albums.
Cons: Lots of work for something that might just make mom angry instead of happy. Very time consuming, I’m sure she’d wonder where her albums are by then, I might have to do one small one to sell her on the idea then go back and do the rest.

Time:09:41 am
I've been uploading more pictures to my yahoo photos site, doing some re-organization of folders, making some things public that weren't before (or some that were a long time ago but were automagically made private when I switched to the new Y! photos beta). Go check it out. =)

Of particular interest are (in this order):
Picture sampler - Photos ranging from mid-70s to this year, including some never-before-seen-online pictures I scanned from mom's photo album
2002 Haunt - I haven't seen these pictures in a long time, but while figuring out what was on all my burned CDs I found the pictures I took while I worked at Knott's
2006 NAC/NAMS - I took some (if I must say so myself) really nice pictures of the Texas state capital, among other conferency things
2004/2005 Christmas - I think these were public before, but they've been private at least as long as I've been using the new photos site, now public again =)

As always, http://photos.yahoo.com/calliope320

In about 4 days (much of which was also spent doing errands and housework, note) I have done:

*drum roll*

6 albums
1 envelope of photos
1 loose 8x10 and a handful of other loose photos
584 items, totaling 370.7 MB

And I still consider myself nowhere near done! There's one large album left of photo-sleeve pages, and about 8=9 of magnetic pages. Exhausting! I wonder if it's faster with those feed-through scanners, no periodic glass cleaning, no careful aligning, and no making sure the door doesn't blow the pictures away when you open it...

Subject:Vacations, computers, and pictures... oh my!
Time:08:29 am
Current Mood:[mood icon] happy
So, on Saturday I had to work 8:15am to 4:30pm, which wasn't too bad I suppose. I had two new employees start that day, which happens to be the busiest day I've seen at that pool (but still 400 people shy of the busiest day I've ever seen). At about 2:30 I got another two new employees who were finished with their WSI class. The day went well over all, we had a couple of issues with some people, but nothing too extreme. (My assistant manager did kick someone out of the facility for using bad language toward her when she asked him to leave an area of the pool that was not open that day.)

Then I got a phone call from my husband Charles saying to pack a bag when I got home. Hmmmm, what could it be?

We stayed the weekend (what was left of it after working all day Saturday, that is) at Castaic Lake. We tried to go down to the lake, but the beach side was super crowded (there was a two-block line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot, so we decided against it), and on the boat side they told us they weren't renting jet skis this year, go figure. Anyhow, we drove around, took a couple of pictures, and went back to the hotel to watch movies and eat pizza. I know it doesn't sound that exciting, but it's kind of nice being able to do little things like that. Charles said we could have pizza and movies at home, but then I reminded him that if we were at home, we'd have house cleaning, the computers, and various other stuff/projects distracting us. =)

We came home on Monday in the late morning, the drive was actually not too bad. The line to get off the freeway at Magic Mountain Parkway was about 2 miles long at a guess, glad we didn't go there! There's a couple of things we would have liked to do, like Magic Mountain, the Channel Islands, etc, but we've decided to do those things another time, when it's not all crowded!

Then yesterday, for some reason, we bought a new computer. =P I've been wanting a laptop for a while actually, so that I can have a computer in my outdoor office at work for the summer. There's only one computer for the management staff to go around, and there'll be three schedules that have to be made/printed each week. The other girls may not know how bad that is, but I do from when David and I had to schedule computer time around each other at EMAC. We now have a Best Buy credit card that we put the computer on, not because we didn't have the money to buy it (we came close to buying it outright because it was taking so much time for the financing people to get back to the sales people) but because that way we'd still have money in the bank for an emergency. That and the fact that our car payment and my one measly credit card are going to be slow to build our credit rating.

Charles already put Debian onto the computer, it automagically has sound, picks up USB drives, and picks up our card reader. Not working yet are the built-in card reader or the ethernet card. Strange, though, because the ethernet card worked during setup. Oh well, Charles will fix it later. =)

Today, I'm doing more scanning work. I have somewhat of a plan for the sticky-paper albums now- I've done some work online, as well as talked to the person at the local scrapbooking store. I'm still not quite brave enough to start taking the pictures out, though, even though I've been told to do so ASAP to protect the pictures. It's still scary! I'm going to scan the pages before I start to make sure the layout and order of my scrapbooks follows the albums as closely as possible.

So, that was my holiday weekend. Cool, huh? =)
