| One of my friends disagrees, but I personally like sleep... Caffeine is not a good substitute, because eventually you have to come down... That or keep upping your dosage of caffeine, to the point where you drink three energy drinks in one sitting. Even when I worked nights I never needed more than one energy drink and a few sodas!
You know what else is good for your health? Simplifying, getting rid of stuff, having a clean house... That's what I need to work on in the near future. My sleep cycle got messed up recently for a number of reasons, so my energy level has been lower than usual. However, once this is back in check, I plan to get cracking on some work here... I also have to work on this because I start school in the beginning of September.
Fall classes are as follows:
Monday and Wednesday 11:20-12:45 Speech 101 13:00-14:25 Health 011
Tuesday and Thursday: 09:40-11:15 Music 321 (Piano) 13:00-14:25 Chicano Studies 007
All of these are general education requirements except for Piano. I already have a music class I took at CSULA, so I wouldn't need to do this, but I've always wanted to learn. My parents think I'm silly, but so be it! | comments: Leave a comment |
| My husband, one of our friends, and myself went to Disneyland yesterday (Sunday). Lots of fun, I haven't uploaded the pictures yet but I will soon.
I was reading the news this weekend and found the story of the kidnapped baby interesting. Especially interesting, this quote:
Susanne Moore, a former Covenant nurse who had a baby Friday at the same hospital, told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that the hospital placed an electronic band on her newborn girl's ankle. She said she was told that if the baby were taken too close to a door or elevator, a sensor would cause the door to lock or the elevator to shut down. Moore said she also was told that if the band were cut off before it was deactivated, the hospital would be locked down.
A couple of comments here...
- What has the world come to that we need to do this because we seemingly EXPECT babies to be stolen from hospitals...?
- Cool idea. I imagine it's RFID technology, but how do you get it to detect when the band has been broken? Does this mean it's a non-re-sizable band that's completely made of electronic components/cables? Is it just a single cable that goes the whole circumference, and if so how do you prevent someone from cutting the rest of the band and slipping that part off? Hmmm.
- This proximity-based door and elevator control is pretty clever, we were talking about something similar on the way home from Disneyland.
- I can see other hospital applications here, particularly for hospitals that have this proximity based control already... why doesn't the ER/OR double doors swing open when a gurney approaches? (So you have to tag all the EMT's gurneys, but that's okay!) Why doesn't the elevator door automatically stay open when a gurney's approaching unless you press the close button (if you're full, you know).
Then you expand it out to office buildings, places where people can't carry their keys/badges all the time... aquatic centers come to mind! Hanging 2 big keys and like 9 small keys from the shoulder strap of my swimsuit on a whistle lanyard while I was teaching lessons may have worked, but it's not nearly as cool as the doors recognizing me automagically!
Fun stuff.
By the way, whoever was still sick at Charles's parents' house (I babysat on Saturday), I think I caught it from them. I've had a stuffy nose all day and feeling generally "blah."
Still pretty productive though, I did the laundry that backed up due to our lack of drying capabilities since Friday.
I also went to school today. I did better than I expected on the test we took last week, I got partial credit for admitting that something went over my head in the reading. =P The reading was about a girl who wanted to eat at the rectory of her Catholic school instead of walking home to eat. The question was something along the lines of "the author criticizes the role of the Catholic church, what criticisms does she have?" Totally over my head, I thought if there was anything criticized it may have been the Mother Superior, but not the "role" of the Church in daily life. Apparently the right answer had something to do with equality and preferential treatment. I guess I was too literal reading the question, because I still feel that's a stretch- inequality among students in that era is a socio-economic issue that may well be limited to that particular scenario that was described, and it's not the church's fault. Other than that, I only had a couple of minor errors, mostly accents and/or spelling in my short answer questions.
Tomorrow, I have to go to parents' house. They're leaving to Mexico on Wednesday night, they'll be gone for two months. There's some talk about parents selling their rental property in about a year, supposedly mom thinks that she spends all of the rental income on upkeep. I think I need to talk her into sitting down and figuring out where her money goes when she gets back.
Of course, there are those in our family who know where mom's money goes, that namely being to the thrift store, the other thrift store, the thrift store in the next town over once a month, the swap meet on Thursdays and Sears. She needs to figure it out for herself, though, to make it stick. Hopefully we can talk her out of selling, though, because that will leave both of my sisters without a place to live. Unless she doesn't really like them and that's her sneaky evil plan all along... Hmmm.
Wow, that kind of jumped around... alot. I guess I haven't posted as often as I should. =P I'd break it up into subject-specific posts, but that ruins the free flow of information and such! | comments: Leave a comment |
| By the way, I want to mention that we have not had hot water in our apartment building since Friday afternoon. Apparently it's an issue with the gas, not just the water heater, because the dryers aren't working either.
You never realize how important gas is until it's gone! I can't wash dishes (not well anyway), can't do laundry (unless I want it to sit around damp until Monday), and can't take a shower at home (unless I wanna freeze!). Glad we're YMCA members and I can shower there!
Maintenace isn't going to come out until Monday. They don't consider it an emergency situation that we can't take showers. =P | comments: Leave a comment |
| So, instead of doing my homework like I probably should have, Charles and I went to Disneyland yesterday. It was a lot of fun, esspecially since it was free now that he's a Disney cast member. We had a lot of fun, we went to Adventureland and New Orleans Square. (I couldn't believe he'd never been to the Tiki room before, so we had to start on that side of the park!) Of course, we were analyzing everything we saw and figuring out how things worked. =P
Pictures are on my Yahoo pictures page, though it's a lot of pictures of things we saw and not that many of us. But you can look if you want, of course! It's here.
PS. We got a new bigger bed, and I love it | comments: Leave a comment |
| With a very prevalent family history of diabetes, I'm always very much aware that it's not un-likely for me to be diagnosed as diabetic at any time. When the doctor ran lab work last week, my blood sugar level was good. However, it was a 9:30am appointment and I can't eat until an hour after I take my medicine, so I was on an empty stomach when my blood was drawn. I figure it's good to keep an eye on my sugar intake even now, as I'm told that it can delay or reduce the onset of diabetes down the line.
Did you know that orange juice has 22 grams of sugar per 8oz serving? (Based on orange juice we'd normally get at the grocery store, a non-pulp calcium added Tropicana you can see here.) I'd imagine it's mostly natural sugar and not added sugar, but still not good! I picked up a half gallon of low-cal low-sugar (20 grams per serving) orange juice, without the calcium added, and it was edible.. umm.. drinkable? It wasn't great, however, and I decided that if I'm not getting the calcium out of it, it wasn't worthwhile. Especially since I've been so good about taking my vitamins and calcium lately.
So as my sister eloquently put it when I was on the phone with her today, I'm "getting off the juice." I bought this today at Fry's:
(Click on picture takes you to Fry's product information page.)
This replaces my one-gallon capacity water cooler that I bought when I was living in a 10' x 20' studio apartment, also known as the birthday cake. It was too small, and getting louder, so loud that I couldn't stand to have it on all day long. I thought it best to upgrade, since the small one probably needed repair worth more than its value to run quietly again.
The new one has three temperatures of water, with separate on/off switches for hot and cold water. So if I don't plan to have it make soup/coffee for me, I can switch off the heated water and still have cold water.
I'd tell you how I like it, but it's in the back of the Explorer down in the basement still. I might get it today, it's actually about 2/3 the weight of the filled 5-gallon bottles that are also in the car. I have cleaning to do, though, which will hopefully also clear a good space for the water cooler. Where the little one is right now isn't a good spot for a bigger one.
But yes, we never have soda at the house, and now I don't plan to drink any orange juice at home. Go me! | comments: Leave a comment |
| It rained today. Also known as free car wash day. I'm sure glad I bought new windshield wipers for the Explorer this month!
I went to PetCo to get food for the lizards. I got lost trying to go there last week, even though I've gone there once before. However, this time I asked the internet how to get there. I got the food, and also bought them a new house. I've been trying to get a good setup in their tank for a while. I want them to have seperate hiding places, because sometimes one of them goes in the house and the other one stays outside all day. You're technically supposed to have one more hide than you have lizards, but there wasn't room for two medium sized hides and I didn't think they'd even fit in the small sized ones. Today they had a new type I hadn't seen before. It's kind of like the magnetic two-part one, except without the outside part and for half the price. It looks like this (click will take you to PetCo product information page):

I scraped away some sand from beneath it because it has a floor and the old house didn't. Well, one of the lizards got so distracted digging around the mound of sand that it didn't take much notice of the house. The other one looked at the house confused for a while
Finally, I picked up the more docile one and put him down with his head just outside one of the three doors. He got the hint and looked inside. He went in up to his hind legs then backed out and kept digging.
I picked up the other one and put her outside another door. She went in, walked straight through, out the other door, and back around to the one she started at. When he saw that the other lizard made a big circle, that got the other one's interest. While they were exploring the house, I was also putting food into the dish, so they didn't poke around for too long before they decided to eat.
I put a VHS tape on the other side of the glass so they feel a little more secure in there for now, but I'll probably remove it when they're more comfortable. I'm also going to see if I have another hide in my lizard tank cleaning kit (a medium kritter keeper I put them in when I clean the tank, it stores lizard supplies when not cleaning) that will fit in the tank now. There may actually be room for a second one of these against the long side of the glass, then we'd be color coordinated (I've never seen this particular color, I even looked for a coordinating small hide while I was at the store today)! I wouldn't want to put another one of the same on the opposite short side because that's the food and water side. You don't want the food and water on top of the heater.
As I'm writing this, they've now discovered that they can climb on top of the house. I may need to start putting the lid on, because on their hind legs they may now reach the top of the tank. (They have a tendancy to do that, get up on their hind legs and make like they're going to climb up the walls. In fact, one of them's doing it now, but from the bottom level and not standing on the furniture. They'll learn eventually, I'd imagine.)
Oh, and today on the way back from PetCo I discovered Smart and Final. Go me! I went there and got some stuff instead of going to the grocery store on the way home. =) | comments: Leave a comment |

| We signed up for a "broadcast basic" package for $12/month that'll get us the channels that in some parts of the county you get with rabbit ears. (2-13, plus some foreign language channels, Discovery, National Geographic, and CNN.) The guy's coming out tomorrow between 10am and noon, and the building's pre-wired, so there'll be plenty of time for me to watch my 1pm soap opera! I've been reading it every day for many months now, this will be nice.
Charles and I discussed the fact that we rent a lot of movies... in fact, sometimes more than once in a week. It's entirely possible that watching the better shows and movie selection on the "standard cable" package (with 36 additional channels, including History, HGTV, USA, Comedy Central, A&E, and TV Land) might in fact be cheaper for us than continuing our movie rental binge. We'll have to see if getting the broadcast basic slows down our rental intake.
It's one of those delicate balances, you know. If we still rent a lot of movies, that means we really like feature movies from the video store even with tv, but if it does slow us down a lot that means we don't need standard cable and will be content with broadcast basic. "We should upgrade to basic cable" is somewhere in between. See how complicated life is? =) | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| I purchased a George Foreman Grill the other day- it was an impulse buy, it was located in the area where I was in line to pick up my laptop that had gotten cleaned out (on warranty) because the fan wasn't working.
I like it. I've mostly made grilled cheese sandwiches with it, but I will be branching out to other grill recipies in time. Probably starting with hot dogs. Yummm, hot dogs without frying in grease. Go George Foreman! | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| | The top corner of the freezer isn't sealing properly, or at all really. That's why the ice cream has melted. I've resolved that we shall eat as much of the freezer food as possible in the next few days, and I shall call someone to come fix it. Or, alternately, I can get one of those latch things, like a lock or a child lock, and that would make it seal. Hmmm. | comments: Leave a comment |
| | I found a coupon for 20% off at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I suppose that'll pay for the gas back there again and some of my time. =P Luckily I have another errand to run in that area as well. | comments: Leave a comment |
| | ...it makes me sad. =( I turned up the dial, the fridge and freezer are controlled by the same dial. I think that it's because there are a lot of water bottles and stuff in the fridge. Maybe it'll be edible in a few hours, or for tomorrow I suppose, but it'll probably taste funny. I bet it'll be all separated and the heavier parts will settle and stuff... | comments: Leave a comment |

| After a month and 7 days, I am declaring our un-packing complete! Just went through a couple of boxes and there’s still a few random things in the living room to be put away, but they’re out of the boxes and sorted. I’ve donated about 5 trash bags of clothes, thrown away more stuff than I thought I would, and set up the office pretty well. I’m going to sort some craft stuff and pictures next, but otherwise I’d say we’re pretty organized now! I’ll check this goal off when I’ve organized the craft stuff and the files on my computer. =) | comments: Leave a comment |
| Okay, my desk is fully put together now. I put my laptop on it (not a huge step, I know) and that’s where I am now. However, it’s kind of in the middle of the office for now because I need to wait for my husband to get home to move the network gear and server so that we can move the little desk out of the way and push my desk to the wall. He said not to touch the stuff till he got home, so I’m not. Instead, I’m messing around online for a while. But it’s okay, I’m rewarding myself for a job well done! | comments: Leave a comment |
| I’m almost done putting my desk together. I went to Ikea and sat at many desks for a long time with a tape measure and stuff. I visualized where everything would go. I basically was choosing between the same desk my husband has and the same style in a “corner” desk, with a matching standalone drawer set. I picked the normal desk one, because I’m going to be adopting the network gear, the server, the flatscreen tv (that’s also a monitor for the server), and telephone. The desk one has more storage space and more counter space once you take that into consideration. If I made my husband adopt the network stuff, I would have taken the corner desk for the smaller footprint. It’s adequate space if I actually had all of it. So, tomorrow I’ll be stashing away various craft stuff and office stuff. I bought magazine box things from Ikea for 25 cents each, that’ll help a lot too. They’re just plan brown cardboard, but I can get like a kajillion of them for the cost of a moderate number of the ones with the metallic frame and fittings. =) | comments: Leave a comment |
| I plan to spend less money next year than we're spending this year. That's because we're actually furnishing this apartment like a real house. =P
We purchased:
- A desk for Charles (my desk will be an art desk)
- Lamps for the living room, bed room, and office
- A laptop stand for me
- Folding tables for the living room (between each of the chairs)
- A stepping stool (so I can clean the lizard tank, I can't unplug it to bring it down anymore now that it's on the tv cabinet)
Go us!
Still to buy: my desk, and maybe one day a couch. :) | comments: Leave a comment |
| So, after two visits from the phone company (the first time, they couldn't get into the telcom room because the key wasn't in the lock box and the manager wasn't home), two tech support calls (the installation CD is Windows/Mac, so we didn't have a user name), and two weeks at our new apartment, our DSL is up and running! So, here's the latest goings on: - We bought a TV cabinet at Best Buy. It took forever to put together (with just one person anyway) but it matches the wood floors and holds all of our DVDs and VHS tapes with room to spare. We put our lizards on top of it so we can watch them while we watch tv. The only other place for them for now was the kitchen table, because the fireplace mantle was only wide enough for the smaller tank.
- We're waiting to hear back about our application for an Ikea credit card. We've got a shopping list that'll go by quicker if we get that. :)
- I've been sorting clothes, trying to donate about half of my pants and maybe as many of my shirts and sweatshirts and such. It was about time I did that, I have too much clothes.
- The cable that the last resident forgot to turn off was finally shut off yesterday. Now we have to give some consideration about whether we want to pay for cable or not. If not, we need to get an antenna for the TV, beause we're currently not getting any channels at all.
On a side note, I've always heard bad things about YMCA aquatics... don't ask me why, but everyone I know who's worked for a Y never liked it, and I always hear stories about their lifeguards doing homework on duty and generally not doing their jobs. This spans four counties, and more than that many Y locations. Well, yesterday I was in the water for an hour and a half... when the lifeguard on duty started teaching aerobics, another lifeguard arrived, sat down on a plastic chair to put his shoes on, did a head count, and then went in the office never to be seen again. An hour later, he re-appears, puts in the lane lines, then goes away through the locker room. The next lifeguard arrives, now the only guard on duty, does a chem check, and sits at the table. A few minutes later, a lady with a YMCA employee badge, real clothes (not a uniform), and flip flops on comes to stand next to him. He shows her the chem check and they proceed to talk for a good ten minutes before they both go into the office. It appeared that the visitor was a supervisory aquatics employee. For the last 250 yards or so that I swam, there was absolutely no employee on the pool deck and about 12 people in the water, 3 of whom were non-swimmers with aqua jogger belts. I did not feel safe in that situation... I left a comment in their comment box at the main counter saying "Please have the lifeguards watch the water." What is it with YMCAs and bad lifeguarding? Someone out there have a YMCA lifeguarding text book? Are they telling them something different than we Red Cross people would come to expect? | So yesterday, Tuesday, I was supposed to meet up with that fellow IT and plan some classes, but it didn't work out. She tried calling me and since it went straight to voicemail and I didn't call her back, she figured I wasn't able to come down to LA County. I, on the other hand, didn't get a beep on my phone until I had been at the meeting place for half an hour (it's okay, we were having a lunch meeting, so I had lunch during that time). So when I called her at her office, the guy who answered the phone said that she had a 1:00 meeting (I was her 12:30) and she didn't call me back before 4:00 which is when I left town. Oh well, we'll set up another time.
I did, however, manage to accomplish the following:
- Signed a course record sheet that I had filled out but forgotten to sign
- Tore off the instructor's copy (pink one) that I wouldn't have gotten had I remembered to sign it in the first place
- Brought home the combo cork/white board that I had bought for the office (I hear tell the guy who took my old desk doesn't want it anyway)
- Got directions to friend's wedding and wedding reception
- Picked up the Title to the Explorer, so I can now officially go change my name on it and add Charles
- Found my Red Cross wallet under the DMV stuff! (Hence the title. My mommy likes to put things away in strange hidden places, but things don't get lost when they're hidden so well.)
- Went shopping at what my dad calls "the third-hand store" (meaning I picked out what I wanted from mom's second-hand store shopping). I got frying pans, a napkin holder that matches our plates, and some candy dishes
- Picked up shirts mom bought for Charles, and a present one of mom's friends sent us for our wedding
I found out they broke their pool at the old place- there won't be people in the water for a week. Something went wrong with their superchlorination. I guess it was just the indoor pool, but the outdoor pool was shut down since November, so I'm not sure if they're planning to heat that up in the mean time. It gets to a nice, chilly 60-65 or so if I remember correctly.
I got an email from Charles's parents wanting to arrange a CPR class. That should be fun, especially since I now found my Red Cross wallet. I now get to extend into Greater LA. That makes four chapters in three counties that I can teach in. I hear they do some national account thing, but I'm not sure if that's just for APs (multi-location corporations) or for traveling instructors such as myself.
The Red Cross lady with jurisdiction over my workplace hasn't returned my email. I'm going to have to go visit her. Again.
Oh, and the gas company guy came. He said that our dryer had lots of lint and stuff on the inside, that it probably has never been cleaned. He said if we vacuum it carefully with one of those reachy wand thingies, that'll make it safe enough to operate. He said the igniter only works in like one of the settings (normal but not perm press, I think?) but it's operable once it's cleaned out. He referred me to a repair place if I wanted it "totally" fixed, but he said it would cost about $150. I've seen new dryers as low as $250, so if we want a working dryer that bad, we'll just buy a new one. I'll vacuum it out tonight. | comments: Leave a comment |

| The phone guy came and fixed the connection, so then my husband fixed up the DSL modem and such, and now we're online! With the laptop anyway, we're still going to get wireless cards for the two desktop computers because the modem is in the living room and we can't run cable through to the bedroom. I thought for a while about putting the desktop computers in the "office" area, but then decided against it. We're already using the desk as a stand for our new printer (which is super cool and wireless) and we don't have a good monitor except the one that we're using already as a TV. (It'll picture-in-picture the computer and television, which is cool.)
Now, that's not to say that I'll be online as much as I used to be before... but at least I'll try to stay logged on so you can leave me messages. :)
My email response time may be quicker too!
Well, I'm going to poke around the internet for a while, then go shower and get ready for work.
